Despite my feelings about the cathedral project sucking up all the Diocese's resources that it should be giving to help its current parishes, I am excited about the Cathedral itself.
I like my Cathedrals to be innovative. The traditionalist have all of Europe. I appreciate a worship space that speaks to a new generation. (LA Cathedral? LOVED IT.) And that this one looks like a cervix from one angle and a giant vulva from another, makes me all the more delighted.
Bring on the Rebirth in Christ!

Gives new and horrible meaning to the phrase "liturgical cycle."
Oh, and - Tag, you're it. The WHAT GOES ON AT YOUR HOUSE? meme has been launched this day at "I have to sit down."

I don't know if you're being satirical or not, but I have to admit that I loved the LA Cathedral. The exterior looks like a fortified mishappen lump, but the worship space inside is amazing and I was really inspired by the art.
Speaking, of Europe have you ever seen the Metropolitan Cathedral in Liverpool: http://www.liverpoolmetrocathedral.org.uk/? Holy modernism, Batman!

Funny Liam should mention the Liverpool Metropolitan cathedral as it is my local cathedral and I thought of it as I watched this video. It was originally intended to have a much more traditional design, but the money in the 1960s just wasn't there for the original design. The population of Liverpool is largely derived from Catholic Irish immigrants fleeing the potato famine in the mid 19th century (more than likely, those who didn't make it to the States) and as such, we have a much higher Catholic population than the vast majority of British cities. The cathedral funds were largely raised by the efforts of ordinary working class people in the post war era when money was not in abundance. The church is, appropriately, built on the site of the Victorian workhouse, last vestige of hope for the destitute and a place of great misery for many. The cathedral has had many problems in its short life because of poor quality building materials and going for the cheap option originally has cost dear in the long term. It is affectionately known locally as Paddy's wigwam, for obvious reasons. I think it is a building which flouts convention in favour of a design which very much captures the spirit of the age in which it was built. It is a beautiful worship space, envelopping the worshippers in a beautiful, soft, blue light. I love the place.
I think your new cathedral will be amazing and I'm certain that you will be indeed be inspired to go out in love and cervix (that is what he said, isn't it? Anyway, let's face it, Our Lady Parts of Christ the Light makes a change from the traditional phalluses (the really smug ones have two phalluses!)
